Alabama

The weather in Alabama is nice most of the time,
but, we have very hot summers with the humidity
high most of the time. Spring and autumn are
lovely seasons, although many autumns we don't
get enough cold night air to get a lot of color on our
trees. It is still a beautiful season. Winters are mild,
except for occasional freezes. Spring is gorgeous,
azaleas, tulips, amaryllis, daffodils, tulip trees, dogwood,
and many many other flowering shrubs, and trees, make
the spring beautiful along with the fresh spring green of the
leaves. We have lots of flowers native to our state, and the
south, and they are beautiful all summer. The same trees,
such as the dogwood, that are so lovely in the spring, turn all
shades of red with red berries on them in the fall, along with
the other hardwood trees that have leaves which color and fall
as the weather cools. We have many pine trees, our yards and
woods are never totally barren looking, but dark green year round.

When it comes to sports, and sporting, Alabama can't be beat.
There are many beautiful golf courses, including the Robert
Trent Jones golf trail, which has several courses over the state.
Two excellent NCAA football teams, University of Alabama
and Auburn University. We have several universities in our
State, but those two are the largest. All of these schools
also have baseball, basketball and track teams which compete
nationally. Excellent fishing is to be found in area lakes, many
very large ones, as well as Alabama's gulf coastal area, with the
bays and deep sea fishing. Alabama is really a state with it all,
from the mountains in the northern part of the state to the gulf
beaches at the far southern tip.

The main crops grown in Alabama are peanuts, cotton, corn and
soybeans. Of course we also grow many vegetable crops starting
in early spring in the southern part of the state. I think you could
grow almost anything here that you desire. I know in our area
of the state, which is in the southern part of the state, we grow
peas of all types, butterbeans, (lima beans for you Yankees)
*smile*, corn, green beans, tomatoes, strawberries, watermelons
and pumpkins. These are the crops you would see in large fields
growing. Then in smaller garden plots, okra, squash, lettuce,
cabbage, turnips, collards, onions, cucumbers, so many I
can't name them all here.

We grow delicious peaches in the south too, and this is done for
a money crop as well. We have apple, plum, pear and fig trees too, but
I don't know of anyone growing them as money crops.
Some really bad freezes one winter a few years back killed many
of the pear and fig trees.

We have many "farms" which are actually ranches now,
considering they raise cattle as the only money
making venture. There are also dairy farms too of course.
Also, many chicken houses in this area of the state, many
for raising to the right stage for slaughter and selling for food, and
others for their eggs. I have seen few goats and sheep in this state
in my travels. You see a few occasionally, but it's not
something done on a large scale here. There are also catfish farms,
where they raise fresh water catfish, a southern dish we all love
and most anyone else who ever tastes them would agree.

I'm sure that I have left out many things about my home state that
are important, including many large industrial sites and companies.
