"Out-Back"
Southern Style

back yard

This is our back yard, as seen from my laundry room window.
This is my best vantage point to watch and film the birds "close up"
as they feed on the sunflower seeds we put out daily for them.

bluejay

This is a blue jay, they come and stand on my deck rail,
feeding from the bottom section of the tube feeders.

dove

However, they are not the only larger birds to do this.
Here is a mourning dove, eating seeds right off the railing.

backyard

This is another picture of our "out back". We live on the
edge of town, so our back yard runs into the woods.
We love the natural look as you can see.

stream

We are very fortunate to have a natural water source for the birds
and other wild life. A tiny stream runs, no matter how dry
the weather gets, all the time right down the left side of our yard.
This is a picture of the shallow water, as it slowly trickles
over some rocks put there by us.

deer

I finally got a good video of 4 deer, grazing
in my back yard the summer of '99. Here is one of them,
she just finished drinking from the stream.
A small fawn, a larger fawn and 2 adults were together.
This was the best snappy shot I could get from the video.

baby cardinal

This is one of this years "babies" from the Cardinal family.
The Cardinals always bring their babies to the feeders.

Chickadee

This is a picture of one of my very favorite birds.
While very small, they are very beautiful. This is
the Carolina Chickadee. They live here all year and feed
all year from my feeders.

Titmouse

Another favorite of mine, is the Titmouse.
They are always here too, with their call of
"Peter Peter Peter" at dawn and dusk especially.
We have the black tufted Titmouse as well
as the plain tufted Titmouse .

These birds are not the only creatures enjoying the
tube feeders on the deck. I have a regular, daily visitor,
who isn't at all frightened of me. I was able
to get him eating, and will probably get more
as he is not about to leave his seed.

raccoon

Yep, a big raccoon is visiting us and doesn't miss a day.
I think he is very handsome, and I'll share the seed with him.
I have learned this is one of a family of raccoons, we have seen
two adults and two younger at one time here at night.

Below is another bird seed eater, they also will
come to the deck feeders, but only if the yard feeders
have been allowed to get empty.

grey squirrel

These images are both taken from video and
therefore, not very clear. This is a very fat chipmunk eating
right off the deck rail. I really enjoy feeding
these birds and other animals. They are a pleasure
to watch and do no harm.

red hibiscus

Hibiscus

I plant many pots of hibiscus, like these,
as well as several other varieties of flowering plants.
I enjoy the blooms and they attract the hummingbirds
and the butterflies. These pictures are obviously brighter
since many of the others are snapped from inside a screened
porch. There is a larger stream of water about 300 feet behind
our house. It is Walnut Creek, and is large enough a few people
fish in it. Because of all this water and woods, we see many hawks
and they are quite beautiful also. The squirrels have become so
accustomed to my husband filling the feeders, they don't run away
when he goes out on the deck unless he approaches them. I will add
more pictures and change some of these as time goes by. We have
counted 36 different species of birds while just watching our "out back".
Visit with us again soon.
