| 079 of 180. Shot from inside and from the left up into the fireplace. We wanted a fireplace in the cabin, but fireplaces are the most inefficient appliance for heating. I searched the internet and found some info on the "Rumford Fireplace". Designed by a fellow by the name of Count Rumford in the late 1700's in revolutionized fireplace building. The characteristics of a "Rumford" is widely splayed sidewalls which reflect much more heat that the slightly splayed walls of a conventional fireplace. The firebox is much shallower than a regular firebox meaning more heat radiates into the room. The detail that is probably the most significant in labeling a Rumford fireplace a "Rumford" is the rounded breast, rather than a squared off lintel. The rounded breast creates a smooth path for air to enter the fireplace, reducing turbulence tremendously. This creates a "sheet of air" entering the fireplace at the top which acts as a barrier for smoke entering the room. Now...if it'll just draw. |
